Details about the Vineyards

Tresillian Vineyard

This is the home vineyard located at West Melton – approx 20kms West of Christchurch

It is a 8ha property with approx 6 ha planted in grapes 60% Pinot Noir, 20% Pinot Gris and 20% Riesling. The soil is Templeton Loam over the top of old riverbed.

The property is situated on the Canterbury Plains. It receives approx 600mm of rain per year. This is supplemented if necessary by irrigation in the growing season.

This property is prone to frost damage although this is reduced by use of frost fans. Tresillian has sustained major frost damage on a number of occasions when the temperatures have been particularly cold for sustained periods when the vines have tender young shoots.

The first Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir vines were planted in 2001, with subsequent plantings of Pinot Noir in 2002, Pinot Gris in 2004 and Riesling in 2005.
Bud burst varies but normally is late September with harvest early May.

Sunnybrae Vineyard

We leased this vineyard in June 2007. It is located on Banks Peninsula in French Farm Bay near the shores of the Akaroa Harbour.

The vineyard is approximately 3ha on the hillside and therefore does not suffer from frost damage in the growing season. Rainfall in this valley is approximately 1200mm per annum (i.e. double that of Tresillian). This level of annual rainfall means that we do not need to irrigate. The soil is a volcanic loam.

The vines were planted in 1992. Varieties are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot and Riesling.

French Farm Vineyard

In June 2008 we leased French Farm Vineyard – also in French Farm Bay.

The vineyard is approximately 4 ha on a hillside. Again this vineyard does not suffer from frost damage nor is it irrigated.

Varieties in this vineyard are Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. The vineyard was first planted in 1989 and has subsequently seen some replacement of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris in 2003 and 2005.

The growing season is slightly longer in this valley than on the Plains, with budburst usually mid September and harvest late April. The vines tend not to lose their leaves until late May to early June.

We have currently sold out of Chardonnay but our new Chardonnay will be released shortly
