Seasons in the Vineyard

June - September
The vines are dormant. They are hardy and are not affected by the cold or snow. This is their rest period.  Over this period the vines are pruned  - old canes are cut off and fresh canes tied down to set the buds for the new canes in place.

September - October
The vines start to bud burst. This is a very vulnerable time as the new shoots are at risk from frost. Tresillian has frost fans that are activated if the trigger point temperature is reached.

November - December
The vines are growing rapidly, although there is still some frost risk.   Flowering occurs in this period. The inflorescences lose their caps exposing the pollen. Grapes are pollinated by wind - they do not require bees to be fertilised.  Accordingly, a sunny and slightly windy December is welcome.

January - February
The fruit sets and the berries start to swell. The bunches will grow and close. The berries are hard and green.

During February, ripening commences and we experience verasion (change of colour).  This makes the young grapes very attractive to birds, so we cover each vineyard with fine mesh nets.  The nets cover from 4 - 8 rows each, meaning that we can work under them when necessary.

March - April
The nets are on, and the berries are ripening. The vines will have stopped growing, instead putting all their energy into ripening the fruit.   The hot days and cooler nights contribute to the intense fruit flavours of the resulting wine.

Harvest commences in the last week of April and it is a very busy time for us.  We will have up to 30 casual pickers for up to four weeks to hand-pick our grapes.

May
Harvest finishes in late May and the nets have to be removed.

The Pinot Gris and Riesling will have their golden leaves and the Pinot Noir leaves will be red. They will lose their leaves completely as they go into winter dormancy.

Great news - we have just released 2 new Pinot Gris - one from our famous Cox Block in dry style and the other off dry from our Neave Block
